RSV Awareness Month is coming to a close, and this week we are highlighting RSV immunization for older adults.
A single dose of RSV vaccine (Arexvy, Abrysvo, or mResvia) is recommended for adults 75 years and older. Adults 60-74 years who are at increased risk of severe RSV disease like having underlying chronic illnesses (e.g., diabetes, obesity, chronic heart or lung disease) or living in a nursing/long-term care home are also recommended one dose of the vaccine. The best time to administer is late summer to early fall (August–October) usually before RSV and respiratory diseases spread. Protection from the vaccine will last at least two RSV seasons. If an adult has already received an RSV vaccine dose, another dose is not recommended this season.
Recent studies suggest high vaccine effectiveness, decreasing hospitalization and death amongst this age group. Strongly recommend RSV vaccine to your older adult patients! Promote the RSV vaccine when they come in for routine or sick appointments or when they are scheduled for other vaccines like updated influenza and COVID-19 vaccines. It is safe to co-administer the RSV vaccine with other vaccines; see CDC vaccine guidance for more information.
