Staying Safer This Winter with COVID-19 Vaccines, Thanks Given to Our Partners

Vaccinate ALL 58 (VA58) is working in all fifty-eight counties in California addressing equitable access to the COVID-19 vaccine and to information about its safety and effectiveness. VA58 is a California Department of Public Health (CDPH) campaign.

We have enjoyed bringing you trustworthy, reliable, and timely information about COVID-19 vaccines. In particular, we have loved sharing how your efforts have made the difference in COVID-19 case rates across our 58 communities! Because of you, countless lives have been saved, people have stayed out of our hospitals, and members of our communities have gotten back to living better, fuller, and safer lives.


And what a year it has been! In 2022, we saw many important milestones, including:

  • The authorization of COVID-19 vaccines for those 6 months - 5 years, 

  • The authorization of the Novavax vaccine as a primary series for those 12+ and as a booster dose for those 18+, 

  • The approval of the Pfizer vaccine for ages 12-15, 

  • The authorization of an updated booster for those 5 and older, and

  • Our newest eligibility: the authorization of updated bivalent doses for those 6 months and older. 

Thank you so much for your attention and efforts to protect our communities and keep each other safe. Have a safe holiday season; we'll see you in the new year.

A Look Back

As we approach the end of 2022, it’s important to look back at where we have come and celebrate the wins. Since 2020, we’ve learned a lot about protecting ourselves and our communities against COVID-19. Perhaps most importantly—we’ve seen that vaccines are our best defense to limit severe illness and death from COVID-19. We have more work to do, but it is estimated that the US vaccination campaign averted 58% of deaths that might have otherwise occurred since December 2020 when the COVID-19 vaccine was first introduced, and millions of lives have been saved.

During the pandemic, Californians have worked tirelessly to reach out and care for those most at risk. Healthcare and frontline workers have worked around the clock. Community-based organizations have deployed pop-up clinics and offered access to life-saving vaccines, testing, and treatment in neighborhoods across the state. This is all thanks to our incredible partners! Here are a few we have the privilege to work with:

Region 1: West Oakland Health Council’s (WOHC) mission is to improve the health and well-being of the communities it serves by providing the highest quality of health care and treatment, including COVID-19 testing and vaccinations, for its diverse patient population throughout Alameda County. Each of the clinic’s health centers strives to be a hub for health, compassion, engagement, and inspiration. WOHC has been a strong partner of the VA58 campaign, hosting vaccination clinics along with other important services.

Region 2: El Concilio Family Services’ mission is to provide direct assistance and educational programs to the underserved Latino Community. The majority of their clients are agricultural and service sector workers and the wellbeing of their families, which is vital to a stable and productive economy. The partnership with VA58 has been instrumental in leveraging other organizations to participate in their efforts to increase vaccination rates in our community.

Region 3: Centro de Unidad Popular Benito Juarez’s (Unidad Popular) mission is to advocate for the health, housing, and basic human rights of indigenous people. They provide unparalleled assistance to the most vulnerable and low-income families that are discriminated against or marginalized due to their language, culture, and traditions. Unidad Popular set up a volunteer support system for more immigrants arriving in the Central Valley to harvest the world’s fresh food supply. Unidad Popular has been a strong partner of the VA58 campaign, hosting vaccination clinics along with other important services. Their recent event, “La Guelaguetza,” in partnership with Kern LHJ, provided COVID-19 vaccines and flu shots as well as California Farmworker Foundation who provided PCR COVID-19 testing. Multigenerational families were able to enjoy this cultural event while also learning how to stay healthy with an array of resources from various partners.

Region 4: Somali Family Services (SFS) provides culturally and linguistically appropriate programs and services to refugee and immigrant communities of San Diego. They offer emergency assistance to the immigrant and refugee community as they work through the impact of COVID-19, support youth programs through an interactive theater series to build unity between Muslims and their neighbors, and are a trusted messenger within the large refugee and immigrant communities of San Diego.

Region 5: A Greater Hope (AGH) provides mental and behavioral health resources, foster care, and adoption services to adults and children in the Victorville and greater San Bernardino area. They recently held an event featuring a vaccine clinic, giveaways including personal protective equipment, food, clothing, books, school supplies, educational exhibits, a craft center, and other festive elements. VA58 and El Sol supported this event which allowed them to conduct extensive outreach and provide education on combatting mis/disinformation to reduce extreme hesitancy that has fueled foster parents’ confusion about youth COVID-19 vaccine eligibility.

Region 6: Pacoima Beautiful has been devoted to helping the community during the COVID-19 pandemic since day one. They provide support in navigating resources available for those suffering due to COVID-19. They currently provide support in scheduling COVID-19 testing and vaccine appointments. Pacoima Beautiful also serves as the Regional Lead for the San Fernando Valley COVID-19 Rapid Response Coalition.

Region 6a: Abrazar is dedicated to promoting the general welfare and prosperity of very poor to medium income seniors and families in Orange County through programs that improve health, nutrition, socialization, lifelong learning and economic self sufficiency in culturally sensitive ways. Abrazar has been a strong partner of the VA58 campaign, hosting vaccination clinics along with other important services.

Region 7: Level UP NorCal’s mission is to improve and promote the health, well-being and advancement of ethnic minorities through education, support, and advocacy. Through education, they can empower a group that has been historically disadvantaged with the first step towards advocating for themselves and closing disparity gaps. Recently, they partnered with other local organizations to host a Día De Los Muertos event including a robust pop-up COVID-19 vaccination clinic where families, children, and elders were able to get vaccinated.

Region 8: Sierra Community House (SCH) strives to better serve the region of North Lake Tahoe and Truckee by sharing resources, leveraging partnerships, and connecting individuals and families with the services they need to thrive and build the strength, safety, and resilience of the community. In October, SCH partnered with local health jurisdictions and used VA58 resources to host a health fair aimed at increasing accessibility to health and mental services, including COVID-19 vaccines and information about COVID-19, for families disproportionality affected by COVID-19, focusing on low-income, multi-generational, and limited English proficient families. With this collaborative effort, bilingual services provided included dental screenings and other preventative dental services, blood pressure screenings, food distribution, wrap-around services, referrals to other services, and COVID-19 and flu immunizations.

 

A Look Ahead

Unfortunately, we’re not out of the woods yet. Experts are concerned about the number of COVID-19, influenza, and RSV cases that began in November. This week, CDPH is hosting a December Week of Action highlighting how families can stay safe through the Winter and Holiday season by getting vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu, practicing harm reduction, and using therapeutics if testing positive with COVID-19.

  • Vaccines: With kids home on winter break, it’s the perfect time to get them vaccinated and boosted. Talk to your provider or visit MyTurn.ca.gov to find an appointment near you. 

  • Harm Reduction: The vaccine played a huge role, but so did all the precautions we took as a community:

    • Following the California SMARTER steps to keep those around us healthy this winter.

    • Following the Travel Guidance from the CDC to keep transmission low.

    • Using trusted information from reliable sources to reduce the spread of misinformation, such as answering the concern surrounding myocarditis.

  • Therapeutics: COVID-19 treatments are safe, free, widely available, and highly effective at preventing COVID-19 illness from becoming serious. They can stop the virus from multiplying in your body, help you test negative sooner, and may reduce the risk of developing long COVID symptoms.

It is especially important to stay aware of rising case rates in your area! With the early rise of flu and RSV and an expected rise in COVID-19 this winter, the CDC urges everyone to get vaccinated against COVID-19 and flu. Find your local county guidelines.

Vaccinate ALL 58 (VA58) está trabajando en los cincuenta y ocho condados de California para brindar acceso equitativo a la vacuna contra el COVID-19, así como información sobre su seguridad y eficacia. VA58 es una campaña del Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH, por sus siglas en inglés).

 

Nos ha dado gusto ofrecerte información veraz, confiable y oportuna acerca de las vacunas contra el COVID-19. En particular, nos ha encantado compartir con otros cómo tus esfuerzos han marcado la diferencia en las tasas de casos de COVID-19 dentro de nuestras 58 comunidades. Gracias a ti se han salvado innumerables vidas, se han evitado hospitalizaciones, y los miembros de nuestras comunidades han vuelto a vivir plenos y seguros. 

¡Y qué año ha sido! En 2022 alcanzamos metas muy importantes, entre ellas:

  • La autorización de las vacunas COVID-19 para niños de entre 6 meses y 5 años, 

  • La autorización de la vacuna Novavax como serie primaria para los mayores de 12 años y como dosis de refuerzo para los mayores de 18.

  • La aprobación de la vacuna de Pfizer para las personas de entre 12 y 15 años. 

  • La autorización de un refuerzo actualizado para los mayores de 5 años, y

  • Nuestra elegibilidad más reciente: la autorización de dosis bivalentes actualizadas para los mayores de 6 meses.

En retrospectiva

A medida que nos acercamos al final de 2022, es importante revisar de dónde venimos y hasta dónde hemos llegado para celebrar las victorias.  Desde 2020, hemos aprendido mucho sobre cómo protegernos y cómo proteger a nuestras comunidades del COVID-19. Tal vez, lo más importante es que hemos visto que las vacunas son nuestra mejor defensa para limitar la enfermedad grave y la muerte por COVID-19. Nos queda trabajo por hacer, pero se estima que la campaña de vacunación de EE. UU., evitó el 58% de las muertes que pudieron ocurrir desde diciembre de 2020, fecha cuando se introdujo por primera vez la vacuna contra el COVID-19 y se han salvado millones de vidas.

Durante la pandemia, los californianos han trabajado incansablemente para tender la mano y atender a los más expuestos. El personal sanitario y de primera línea ha trabajado sin descanso. Las organizaciones comunitarias han desplegado clínicas móviles y han ofrecido vacunas, pruebas y tratamientos vitales en barrios de todo el estado. Todo ello gracias a nuestros increíbles colaboradores. He aquí algunos con los que tenemos el privilegio de trabajar:

Región 1: West Oakland Health Council (WOHC) tiene como misión mejorar la salud y el bienestar de las comunidades a las que sirve, brindando atención médica y tratamientos de alta calidad, incluyendo pruebas y vacunas contra el COVID-19. Esto beneficia a una diversa población de pacientes en todo el condado de Alameda. Cada uno de los centros de salud de esta clínica se esfuerza por ser un lugar en donde las personas encuentran sanidad, compasión, compromiso e inspiración. El WOHC ha colaborado estrechamente en la campaña VA58, organizando clínicas de vacunación y otros servicios importantes.

Región 2: El Concilio Family Services tiene como misión brindar asistencia directa y programas educativos a la comunidad latina de bajos recursos. La mayoría de nuestros clientes son trabajadores del sector agrícola y servicios, y el bienestar de sus familias es vital para una economía estable y productiva. La asociación con VA58 ha sido decisiva para conseguir que otras organizaciones se unan a favor de aumentar las tasas de vacunación en nuestra comunidad.

Región 3: El Centro de Unidad Popular Benito Juárez (Unidad Popular) tiene la misión de defender la salud, la vivienda y los derechos humanos básicos de los indígenas, prestándoles una asistencia sin igual a las familias más vulnerables, con menos ingresos, y discriminadas o marginadas por su lengua, cultura y tradiciones. Unidad Popular creó un sistema de voluntariado en apoyo a aquellos inmigrantes que llegan al Valle Central a cosechar alimentos frescos para el mundo. Unidad Popular ha colaborado estrechamente en la campaña VA58, organizando clínicas de vacunación y otros servicios importantes. Su reciente evento, "La Guelaguetza", en asociación con Kern LHJ, proporcionó vacunas contra el COVID-19 y la gripe. Por su parte, la California Farmworker Foundation proporcionó pruebas PCR para detectar el COVID-19. Numerosas familias multigeneracionales pudieron disfrutar de este acto cultural, a la vez que aprendieron formas de mantenerse sanas, gracias a la serie de recursos brindados por estos colaboradores.

Región 4: Servicios Familiares Somalíes (SFS). Esta organización ofrece en San Diego, programas y servicios culturales y lingüísticamente adecuados y de emergencia a las comunidades de refugiados e inmigrantes, y les atiende mientras superan los efectos del COVID-19. También, apoyan programas para jóvenes a través de una serie de obras de teatro interactivas, las cuales fomentan la unidad entre musulmanes y sus vecinos, y son, en San Diego, un mensajero de confianza dentro de las grandes comunidades de refugiados e inmigrantes. 

Región 5: Una Esperanza Mayor (AGH, por sus siglas en inglés) proporciona recursos de salud mental y del comportamiento, así como servicios de acogida y adopción a los adultos y niños que viven en la zona de Victorville y el área metropolitana de San Bernardino. Recientemente, esta organización celebró, con una clínica de vacunación, un acto en donde entregaron equipos de protección personal, alimentos, ropa, libros y material escolar. En el acto hubo exposiciones educativas, un centro de artesanía y otros elementos festivos. Gracias a VA58 y El Sol, se llevó a cabo una amplia labor de divulgación y educación, a través de medios sociales y en persona, con el fin de combatir la información errónea y la desinformación, y reducir las dudas que han alimentado la confusión y la resistencia extrema hacia la vacuna contra el COVID-19 y la elegibilidad de los jóvenes, que tienen los padres adoptivos.

Región 6: Pacoima Beautiful se ha dedicado a ayudar a la comunidad desde el día en que comenzó la pandemia de COVID-19. Esta organización brinda apoyo a quienes sufren a causa del COVID-19 y les ayuda a navegar los recursos disponibles. Actualmente, ayudan a programar citas para hacerse las pruebas de COVID-19 y ponerse las vacunas. Pacoima Beautiful también actúa como líder regional de la Coalición de Respuesta Rápida ante el COVID-19 del Valle de San Fernando.

Región 6a: Abrazar se dedica a promover el bienestar general y la prosperidad en el Condado de Orange de las personas mayores y las familias de ingresos muy bajos y medios, a través de programas que mejoran la salud, la nutrición, la socialización, el aprendizaje permanente y la autosuficiencia económica, tomando en cuenta el contexto sociocultural de sus participantes. Abrazar ha colaborado estrechamente en la campaña VA58, organizando clínicas de vacunación y otros servicios importantes.

Región 7: Level UP NorCal tiene como misión mejorar y promover la salud, el bienestar y progreso de las minorías étnicas, por medio de la educación, el apoyo y la defensa de estas. A través de la educación podemos capacitar a un grupo históricamente desfavorecido para que dé el primer paso hacia la defensa de sus derechos y la eliminación de las disparidades. Recientemente, se asociaron con otras organizaciones locales para conmemorar el Día de Los Muertos, celebración que incluyó una clínica de vacunación contra el COVID-19 en donde familias, niños y ancianos pudieron vacunarse.

Región 8: Sierra Community House (SCH) se esfuerza por servir mejor a la región de North Lake Tahoe y Truckee compartiendo recursos, aprovechando las asociaciones, y conectando a las personas y familias con los servicios necesarios para impulsarse y fortalecerse, y para construir seguridad y resistencia dentro de sus comunidades. En octubre, el SCH se asoció con las jurisdicciones sanitarias locales y los recursos VA58 para organizar una feria de salud destinada a aumentar el acceso a los servicios de salud física y mental. En ella se colocaron vacunas contra el COVID-19 y se brindó información relacionada con la enfermedad. Esta feria benefició a las familias desproporcionadamente afectadas por el COVID-19, centrándose en aquellas de bajos ingresos, multigeneracionales y con dominio limitado del inglés. Gracias a este esfuerzo y colaboración, se prestaron servicios bilingües que incluyeron revisiones y cuidados dentales preventivos, chequeos de la presión arterial, distribución de alimentos, consultas integrales y vacunación contra el COVID-19 y la gripe. Asimismo, algunos pacientes fueron referidos a otros servicios médicos.

 

Una mirada al futuro

Por desgracia, aún no estamos fuera de peligro. Los expertos están preocupados por el número de casos de COVID-19, gripe y VSR reportados en noviembre. Del 12 al 18 de este mes, el Departamento de Salud Pública de California (CDPH, por sus siglas en inglés) lleva a cabo la Semana de Diciembre en Acción, con la cual se destacan las medidas que pueden adoptar las familias para mantenerse seguras durante el invierno y las fiestas. Estas incluyen la vacunación contra el COVID-19 y la gripe, la práctica para reducir daños y el uso de tratamientos terapéuticos si la prueba de COVID-19 da positivo.

  • Vacunas: Teniendo a los niños en casa durante las vacaciones de invierno, es el momento perfecto para vacunarlos y ponerles el refuerzo. Habla con tu doctor o visita MyTurn para encontrar una vacuna cerca de ti. 

  • Reducción de daños: La vacuna desempeñó un papel muy importante, pero también todas las precauciones que tomamos como comunidad:

    • Siguiendo los Pasos SMARTER en California este invierno para mantener sanos a quienes nos rodean.

    • Siguiendo la Guía de viaje de los CDC para mantener baja la transmisión.

    • Utilizar información veraz de fuentes fiables para reducir la difusión de información errónea y para saber cómo responder a las inquietudes sobre la miocarditis.

  • Tratamientos terapéuticos: Los tratamientos contra el COVID-19 son seguros, gratuitos, ampliamente disponibles y muy eficaces para evitar que la enfermedad causada por el COVID-19 agrave, ya que estos pueden impedir que el virus se multiplique en tu organismo, además pueden ayudarte a dar negativo con mayor prontitud y a reducir el riesgo de desarrollar síntomas de COVID prolongado.

Es especialmente importante estar al tanto del aumento de casos en tu zona. Con el auge temprano de la gripe y el VRS, y el incremento previsto para este invierno de COVID-19, los CDC instan a todo el mundo a vacunarse contra COVID-19 y la gripe. Encuentra aquí las directrices para tu condado.

  • A partir de 4 de diciembre, el estado de California registra una tasa de casos positivos de 11.7%.

  • Escucha los consejos de los mejores médicos del estado, los cuales te ayudarán a estar más seguro estas fiestas. 

    • El Dr. Mark Ghaly dice que las vacunas y los refuerzos siguen siendo la mejor protección contra el COVID-19 y la gripe.

    • El Dr. Tomás Aragón insta a los californianos a tomar estas 5 sencillas precauciones para combatir el COVID-19. También puedes ver a la Dra. Pan dando estos 5 consejos en YouTube o puedes encontrar otros consejos del CDPH para protegerte a ti y a los demás.
