Weekly Wrap Up – January 27, 2023

Recommendations to Reduce COVID-19 Bivalent Infant/Toddler Vaccine Wastage

To reduce COVID-19 Pfizer and Moderna Bivalent Infant/Toddler vaccine wastage, CDPH requests that Providers:

  • Place small orders and re-order as inventory is used up, even if this means placing more frequent orders. CDPH will continue to respond to requests as needed.
  • Utilize the Vaccine Marketplace to share and obtain excess vaccines with neighboring Providers.
  • Schedule infants/toddlers on the same day to maximize vaccination opportunities. See Wastage and Missed Vaccination Opportunities for more information.

As always, please continue to vaccinate all who are eligible.

The Janssen (J&J) vaccine currently in the field expires on February 28, 2023. The last doses of vaccine in federal inventory expire in May, 2023.

Updated (Bivalent) COVID-19 Booster Stickers

To help your practice create a vaccination-positive environment, consider wearing a message. As trusted messengers, you and clinic staff are uniquely positioned to influence your patients by promoting that your staff have received the updated bivalent COVID-19 booster.

Take a moment now to download and print these self-adhesive "I got my updated COVID booster" stickers (compatible with Avery labels 94506) for your team to use on badges or uniforms. These stickers may help start conversations with families and patients, conveying the importance of keeping up with the best protection against the worst effects of COVID-19. They can also be shared with patients who get a booster.

Reminder: Beyond-Use Date vs. Expiration Date

The expiration date is determined by the manufacturer as to when the COVID-19 vaccine is no longer acceptable to administer to patients, regardless of storage condition. The beyond-use date is the last day/time that the COVID-19 vaccine can be safely used after it has been transitioned between storage states (thawed, refrigerated, etc.) or altered (diluted, drawn up for administration, etc.) for patient use. The beyond-use date replaces the manufacturer’s expiration date but never extends it. Providers should properly dispose of the vaccine on whichever date/time comes first. For further information, please see Reporting & Disposal of Nonviable Doses.
