Celebrate Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in May!

Join us as we celebrate Asian American, Pacific Islander (AAPI) Heritage Month! Did you know that more than 6 million Californians trace their roots to East and Southeast Asia, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Pacific Islands?

California is home to many of the largest AAPI communities in the U.S.! This month is a good reminder to meet the health needs, of our AAPI community by promoting vaccination and addressing health disparities around hepatitis B.

The AAPI population includes more than half of Americans with chronic hepatitis B, yet only about 6% of the entire population. Many first-generation immigrants from China, Korea, Vietnam, and the Pacific Islands have been highly impacted by the virus as it has been circulating for thousands of years and passed down to generations.

Protect your patients by:

  • screening for hepatitis B virus (federal recommendations include all adults)
  • providing education about hepatitis B (available in many languages)
  • vaccinating (updated ACIP recommendations for all adults 19 – 59 years of age)
  • arranging follow-up care for anyone who is chronically infected

Additionally, vaccine rates for some routine vaccines are low in the AAPI population–only 29.2% vaccinated for Shingles and 28.4% vaccinated for HPV (among females). Consider these communication strategies to increase vaccine uptake in the AAPI community, and strongly recommend vaccination for all these and all other routine vaccines, including COVID-19.

Thank you for helping to keep AAPI communities healthy and safe!
