Protect Babies from the Start with Maternal RSV Immunization!

October is National RSV Awareness Month: Please educate staff and prenatal patients about RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus), the leading cause of hospitalization for infants in the U.S.

Recommendations to prevent severe RSV disease in newborns include immunizing pregnant persons with ABRYSVO® (Pfizer) at 32 through 36 weeks of pregnancy, from September 1 – January 31.*

As a reminder, pregnant persons also need:

  • Updated 2024-25 COVID-19 vaccine if they have not yet received it.
  • Flu vaccine as soon as possible.
  • Tdap vaccine at 27-36 weeks gestation.

Utilize these template patient portal and robocall messages to recall patients who need RSV immunization.

For more information, including common patient concerns, refer to this CDPH communication and these resources below:

  • Vaccine Fact Sheet
  • Clinical Guidance for RSV Vaccination for Pregnant People (CDC)
  • Immunization Resources
  • Communications Toolkit
  • Taj’s Story, a toddler’s story of being hospitalized twice for RSV
  • Emily’s Story, a heart-breaking story of her young daughter who was hospitalized with RSV and ultimately succumbed to the disease

*If maternal vaccination was not given, unknown, or if the infant was born within 14 days of maternal RSV vaccination, infants younger than 8 months old should receive nirsevimab monoclonal antibody (Beyfortus®, Sanofi) from October 1 – March 31 as early as possible.

Vaccine Shipment Holds for the Fall/Winter Holiday Season

As we approach the Fall and Winter seasons there will be various holidays that may impact provider's availability to receive vaccine shipments. Though CDPH has requested shipment holds on most of the holidays, providers should remember to set a temporary closure on their myCAvax accounts to avoid shipment incidents. Enabling temporary closures will allow CDPH to determine potential shipment dates and exclude any necessary orders from processing as a measure to prevent incidents from occurring. Refer to the calendars below:

  • SGF Cadence Calendar
  • BAP Cadence Calendar

Need assistance with adding or updating a temporary closure? Contact the Provider Call Center at 833-502-1245 or via email ProviderCallCenter@cdph.ca.gov.
