Required Product Training for Bivalent Vaccines

COVID-19 Vaccine Product Training now links to CDC’s simplified summary sheets for Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines. There is now one set of Preparation & Administration and Storage & Handling summaries for each manufacturer covering both monovalent and bivalent vaccine products.

To ensure staff are proficient with all new vaccine products in their inventory, CDC requires that anyone storing, handling, administering, or managing COVID-19 vaccines complete the role-specific product training—only for products your location will be administering.

New Storage and Beyond-Use-Date (BUD) Tracking Labels

CDC posted simplified storage and BUD tracking labels, now one set for Moderna and Pfizer-BioNTech vaccines.

Use storage labels to help staff easily identify the correct product (monovalent or bivalent) based on the recipient’s age; use BUD tracking labels to identify beyond-use-date limits for refrigerated storage.

Refer to the COVID-19 Provider Operations Manual (POM) for links to these new labels and receiving guidance:

  • How to Receive Moderna Vaccines
  • How to Receive Pfizer-BioNTech Vaccines

Updated Immunization Schedule

CDC’s Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) recommended the addition of COVID-19 vaccines to the 2023 childhood and adult immunization schedules. Updated schedules and program guidance will be published in early 2023. School-entry vaccination requirements are determined by state or local jurisdictions.

Never Miss a Vaccination Opportunity!

Never miss a vaccination opportunity because of fear of vaccine wastage! Manage your inventory to maximize vaccinations, protect vaccine potency, and minimize wastage where possible—but don’t turn away potential recipients to avoid puncturing a vial at the end of the day! For further guidance, see the COVID-19 Provider Operations Manual: Inventory Management.

COVID-19 Vaccination and Pregnancy

CDC continues to recommend COVID-19 vaccination during pregnancy and for infants.

  • COVID-19 can cause severe disease in pregnant people and infants.
  • COVID-19 vaccination of pregnant people is safe for pregnant people and infants.
  • Maternal monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccination protects pregnant people and infants ages 0-5 months from COVID-19, including from severe disease and hospitalization.
  • Monovalent vaccine effectiveness was lower during Omicron predominance, when there was mismatch between the vaccine and predominant circulating variant.

Everyone, including people who are pregnant trying to become pregnant, may

become pregnant, and who are breastfeeding, should stay up to date with COVID-19 vaccines and get the recommended updated (bivalent) booster, when eligible.
