CDC Recommends Updated 2023-2024 COVID-19 Vaccines for Everyone 6 Months and Older

CDC now recommends the newly-authorized 2023-2024 monovalent COVID-19 vaccines for everyone age 6 months and older, to help protect them against severe COVID-19 illness this fall and winter:

  • Individuals 5 years of age and older (regardless of previous vaccination) are recommended to receive a single dose of an updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccine
  • Individuals 6 months through 4 years of age who have previously been vaccinated are recommended to receive one or two doses of an updated mRNA COVID-19 vaccine, depending on history and timing of previous COVID-19 vaccine doses.
  • Unvaccinated individuals 6 months through 4 years of age are recommended to receive three doses of the updated Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 Vaccine or two doses of the updated Moderna COVID-19 Vaccine.
  • An updated COVID-19 vaccine dose can be given at least 2 months after receipt of a prior COVID-19 vaccine dose.
  • Note: FDA is still reviewing the 2023-2024 Novavax vaccine. The original formulation of Novavax vaccine may still be administered if it is determined that the individual should not wait for a 2023-2024 Novavax COVID-19 vaccine or receive a 2023-2024 mRNA COVID-19 vaccine.

Bivalent mRNA COVID-19 Vaccines Are No Longer Authorized

Remove bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from your inventory. See table below for a listing of COVID-19 bivalent vaccines that should be removed from your inventory. For additional information, see IIS COVID-19 Vaccine Related Code I CDC.

To minimize the risk of vaccine administration errors, providers should:

  • Remove all bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from storage units regardless of expiration dates
  • Dispose of all bivalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccine vials in pharmaceutical waste containers or comingled pharmaceutical/sharps waste containers in accordance with local regulations and practice protocols for the disposal of regulated medical waste.
    • BAP and VFC Providers should report all disposed inventory as wastage in myCAvax as reason “other.” Inactive providers should be able to report waste for themselves on September 13, 2023.
    • Federal agencies and pharmacies can use Vaccine Provider Ordering Portal (VPoP) to generate wastage files to upload into VTrckS.
