National Immunization Awareness Month: Adolescents

August is National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM). This annual observance highlights the importance of vaccination for people of all ages. Together, we can help raise awareness about the importance of vaccination and encourage people to talk to a healthcare provider they trust about staying up to date on their vaccinations.

Each week of NIAM has a different focus: this week it’s on adolescents. To protect against many serious vaccine-preventable diseases, adolescents should receive:

  • Tdap vaccine to protect against tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough (pertussis)
  • HPV (human papillomavirus) vaccine to protect against cancers caused by HPV
  • Meningococcal conjugate vaccine (MenACWY) to protect against the devastating effects of bacterial meningitis; teens and young adults may also be vaccinated with a serogroup B meningococcal vaccine
  • Flu vaccine every year to protect against influenza
  • COVID-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months and older

California HPV Vaccine Week

To go along with the observance of NIAM and this week dedicated to adolescent immunizations, there's also California HPV Vaccine Week, August 4-10, an annual observance held the first full week of August. The goal of this campaign is to increase awareness of the HPV vaccine and promote the vaccination of adolescents ages 9-13. California HPV Vaccine Week is a great way for families, providers, coalitions supporting children’s health, and local health departments to get out the message about the importance of the HPV vaccine as cancer prevention.
