May 14th is Mother's Day and World Vaccine Day

For the upcoming US celebration of Mother’s Day, please join CDPH in celebrating mothers for keeping their families and children healthy.  May 14th is also World Vaccine Day, which honors Dr. Edward Jenner and James Phipps for their discovery of the first vaccine, which prevented smallpox!

As World Vaccine Day and Mother’s Day fall on the same date this year, please remind your pregnant patients that getting vaccinated is the best way to protect themselves and their babies against dangerous infections. We strongly recommend that your pregnant patients receive the following immunizations:

  • COVID-19 updated (bivalent) vaccine.
  • Tdap at the earliest opportunity between 27-36 weeks of each pregnancy.
  • Influenza vaccine, typically each fall by the end of October.

Remind them that these immunizations protect both during pregnancy and after birth. Resource flyer in English and Spanish.

If you are a mom, and/or if you work with moms, thank you for all you do to keep mothers, and their families protected against infectious diseases. Happy Mother’s Day!
