Enrolled providers in the California COVID-19 Vaccination Program have vaccine inventory that may expire soon, including many lots of the Moderna vaccine. Be sure to reference the table of expiring lots below for a detailed list by product. Please see the communication about the vaccine expiry extension for Pfizer Tris-sucrose (12+, gray cap) and Pfizer pediatric (5-11 years, orange cap) vaccine products. Janssen (Johnson & Johnson) received an expiration extension in May 2022, please see this communication to learn more. No further shelf life extensions are expected for the remaining Janssen. Some Moderna monovalent vaccine products (12+ years) that were set to expire in November received an extension, please see this communication for more information. To prevent a gap in providers' abilities to provide primary doses, we recommend quarantining and continuing to store recently expired Pfizer and Moderna monovalent COVID-19 vaccines in anticipation of a shelf-life extension. The extension will ensure the administration of monovalent primary doses until bivalent vaccines are approved for the administration of primary doses.
Please note that some doses with less than 30 days of shelf-life may be shipped. We anticipate shelf-life extensions on those doses in the near future. CDPH recommends providers order in smaller amounts and re-order as needed.
We encourage all providers to:
- check your inventory
- if able, quarantine and continue to store recently expired Moderna and Pfizer monovalent vaccines in anticipation of a shelf-life extension for those products
- update vaccine inventory records in VaccineFinder
- report vaccine waste in myCAvax
- utilize the Vaccine Marketplace
Please reference the Vaccine Management Checklist job aid for detailed guidance and links to other helpful resources. Continue to monitor expiration dates of vaccine inventory and follow a first-in, first-out inventory management practice to ensure that vaccines soon to expire are used first.
