Did you know? An estimated 70% of oral cancers are attributed to the human papillomavirus (HPV). Moreover, in recent years, HPV oral cancers have surpassed cervical cancer as the most prevalent type of HPV cancer. HPV oral cancers can affect both males and females.
The latest data indicate that HPV vaccination coverage is not keeping pace with other adolescent vaccines like Tdap and MenACWY. Bundle your recommendation for all adolescent vaccines, including HPV vaccine, in the same way, on the same day. You can start the vaccine discussion with, “Now that your child is 11, they need three vaccines to help protect against meningitis, HPV cancers, and whooping cough. We’ll give these shots during today’s visit. Do you have any questions about these vaccines?”
The HPV vaccine prevents 6 types of HPV cancers including cervical, oral, anal, vulvar, vaginal, and penile.
During Oral Cancer Awareness Month and throughout the year, ensure that all of your clinic and front office staff have talking points to support parents in deciding to choose a vaccine that prevents cancer!
