Pediatric Sepsis Week is April 16th – 22rd.

Join the Sepsis Alliance for the fifth annual Pediatric Sepsis Week April 16th – 22nd. Each year 75,000 children will develop sepsis in the United States, and some of those children will pass away from the infection. In fact, sepsis is the leading cause of death of young children and babies worldwide.

This year, join us in raising awareness of the signs and symptoms of sepsis in children, and honoring the innocent lives lost.

Sign of Sepsis in Children:

  • Child feels abnormally cold to the touch
  • Child’s skin looks mottled, bluish, or very pale
  • Rash that does not fade when pressed
  • Very fast breathing
  • Convulsions OR Seizures
  • Lethargic or difficult to wake

Additional Signs for children under 5:

  • Not drinking or feeding
  • Repeated vomiting
  • 12 hours without urinating

How Can I Raise Awareness?

  • Know the facts and signs of sepsis
  • Promote COVID-19 and routine vaccinations amongst your patients - remember, infections like COVID-19, pneumococcus, and influenza can also cause sepsis!
  • Sepsis death is avoidable and does not impact all Americans equally. By knowing the disparities, you can take special care in your practice:
    • Black/African American, preterm infants are 15 times more likely to develop sepsis, and 15 times more likely to die from it than their non-black counterparts.
    • Infants from lower-income families are 20% more likely to die from sepsis.
    • Infants from uninsured families are 3 times more likely to die from sepsis.

Share resources in your clinic and on social media using the hashtag #PediatricSepsisWeek and tag @SepsisAlliance.

REMINDER: Children who may have sepsis need immediate emergency care. Advise parents that if they fear Sepsis in their child, they should call 911 and say, “I am worried about Sepsis.”
