Q: Are monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines authorized by FDA as booster doses for individuals 5 years of age and older?
A: No. The new bivalent booster recommendations replace all prior booster recommendations for this age group. Monovalent mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are no longer authorized by the FDA as booster doses for individuals 5 years of age and older.
If a monovalent vaccine is incorrectly administered for a booster dose, please see CDC Interim Clinical Considerations: Appendix D for guidance. All vaccine administration errors should be reported to VAERS.
