Weekly Wrap Up – May 12, 2023

DHCS Message: COVID-19 Billing and Policy

The federal Public Health Emergency (PHE) ended on Thursday, May 11, 2023. Please see COVID Call Center Communication: The End of the PHE.

Providers should continue to abide by and follow the billing and policy direction for COVID vaccine, testing, and therapeutics as published on the COVID-19 Medi-Cal Response page. As the Public Health Emergency (PHE) unwinds, articles are and will continue to be published. Below are recently published articles (April 2023) from the Response page:

  • Family PACT Client Enrollment Policy Update
  • Update: Discontinuation of the Coronavirus (COVID-19) Uninsured Group Program

Once new policy is issued, it will be published to the website, and would be expected to include any applicable billing changes as well. Providers are expected to continue following published policy until directed otherwise.

Vaccine Temperature Excursions

What is a temperature excursion?
Any temperature reading outside the recommended ranges in the manufacturers’ package inserts (or the EUA) is considered a temperature excursion.

Why should I monitor temperature excursions?
Vaccines are very sensitive to temperature changes and a temperature excursion may affect the viability of the vaccine.

How do I know if a vaccine had a temperature excursion?
Your digital data logger will tell you.

What should I do if there is a temperature excursion?
Quarantine the vaccine and label "DO NOT USE" until you determine viability. Contact the manufacturer or use one of their temperature excursion tools to see if the vaccine is still viable. You must report temperature excursions to myCAvax. Even if the vaccine is still viable, you must report!

Manufacturer Contact Information:
  • Moderna: Phone: 866-MODERNA or 1-866-663-3762 | Email: excursions@modernatx.com | Online Tool
  • Novavax: Phone: 844-NOVAVAX | Website to Submit Inquiry
  • Pfizer: Phone: (800) 438-1985 | Online Internal Data Sheets (Look for “Interact with Medical Information Digital Assistant” under Comirnaty Quick Finder)

How to Report Waste of the Moderna Blue Cap (6 Months+) Vaccine

If administering adult doses, the Moderna blue cap (6 months+) vaccine has a total of 5 doses. If administering pediatric doses, the vaccine has a total of 10 doses. CDC has defined the maximum amount of waste that can come from these vials to be 5 doses (counting all doses as adult).
  • If you administer 1 adult dose from the vial and waste the rest, report 4 doses wasted.
  • If you administer 1 pediatric dose from the vial and waste the rest, report 4 doses wasted.
  • If you administer 3 pediatric doses from the vial and waste the rest, report 2 doses wasted.

For further information, see Reporting & Disposal of Nonviable Doses.

Upcoming System Maintenance Tomorrow, May 13

On Saturday, May 13, 2023, from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM PT, myCAvax and My Turn will experience a scheduled CDPH Firewall maintenance.

This will impact Providers' ability to see VaccineFinder data when placing a myCAvax vaccine order. All other myCAvax Provider features should not be impacted during this time. My Turn appointments completed and/or updated during this time will be queued and sent to CAIR once connectivity is restored.
