Preventing RSV in Infants and Toddlers

This week during National RSV Awareness Month, CDPH is highlighting Respiratory Syncytial Virus (RSV) prevention for infants and toddlers. Infants are at elevated risk of RSV complications if exposed. This respiratory virus can spread, when someone who is sick with RSV coughs or sneezes near others and by touching objects that have the virus on them, like countertops and toys. RSV symptoms can be similar as the common cold, but may be severe for children under 12 months, especially for infants between 0-6 months of age.

Promote the RSV Vaccine

If the mother did not receive the RSV vaccine during pregnancy, providers may encourage parents to vaccinate their infants and toddlers with nirsevimab (Beyfortus®) between October through March, if their child is:

  • Under 8 months of age. If they are born during RSV season, then recommend vaccinating the baby within their first week of life.
  • Between 8-19 months of age and at high risk for RSV (has chronic lung disease; is severely immunocompromised; has cystic fibrosis; is American Indian or Alaska Native).

If their child is older than 19 months and is sick with RSV, recommend they keep their child at home until their symptoms begin to improve or are mild, to prevent the spread of RSV at daycares and schools

Promoting Prevention this Season

Listen to and share Emily’s RSV story to spread awareness and advocate for children to receive the RSV vaccine.

Thank you for your commitment to stopping the spread of RSV among infants and toddlers this season!
